Well it’s freezing here lately. Absolutely Baltic (as us Scots would say). My poor fiance is working outside in the afternoons in temperatures approaching -20C! I am lucky enough to be indoors with heating, and a hot pack in my pocket, but I got a blast of the icy cold wind in my face when I walked to Subway. It’s expected to be like this at least into next week and, although I prefer it to the endlessly hot Korean summer, I do wish it would get a touch less cold.

The semester has almost come to an end. That means my little students will soon graduate kindergarten. Add in school reports and the fact that we change franchise to YBM ECC in March and it means a busy couple of months. This next week I probably won’t be around much because my short term goal is to get the report cards out of the way. I nervous about the franchise change as there will be so many new books to get used to. I suppose it’s still teaching ESL so it can’t be very different.

  • Of Cheat Days and Connections

Yesterday I was so hungry on my diet. I have lost over 2 kg so I decided to award myself a cheat day today. I’m going to get back on the diet tomorrow. Back to counting calories. It’s really just one day. I haven’t given up. So this morning as well as my ice Americano…

  • Of Project Hail Mary and Passwords

I have read quite a few books in the past year or so, but the one I have enjoyed the most is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (author of The Martian). It’s a story of survival, but also friendship and humanity. It’s science fiction but not too sciency or too technical. It’s the kind…

  • Of Project Panama and Pasta

I was a bit shocked to read about Project Panama. The company Anthropic AI destroyed 2 million books to scan them and train their AI machines. According to the Times of India article, the company reasoned that long form texts would teach artificial intelligence more effectively, but to do that their fast scanning system required…

  • Of Takoyaki and Temptation

I started a diet again on Saturday. Just counting calories and using the My Fitness Pal app on the phone. Nothing too complicated. So far I’ve kept to about 1,200 calories per day but today my loved one surprised me with a treat from my favourite little food truck. Takoyaki! So today I ate 1,464…

  • Of Reports and Retreats

It’s report card season again! Oh joy! I’m trying to think of positive things to say about all my students. With most of them it’s easy, but one or two present a challenge. Needless to say, this week there will be no other creative writing done, no chance to write poetry or work on a…
