Lately I read two books that were recommended to me by another English teacher, one of the three new women who started working at the academy recently. I have to say I was seriously disappointed by both books. Obviously everyone has different tastes and she had really enjoyed the novels. I wanted to like them, I am not a literature snob and read lots of popular fiction but I had to be honest.

I regretted wasting my time reading them, but then I had a thought. As a writer, I know it’s important to be widely read. It occurred to me that poorly written books are not a waste of my time. I can see what not to do, what to avoid when writing. I regret some things in my life, as do we all, but from now on, I will look upon every book, good or bad, as an opportunity to learn my craft.
